How to Spot Bait-and-Switch Sellers

Bait-and-switch is the oldest scam in ecommerce. Learn the warning signs, verification tactics, and how to protect your money before you ever submit an order.

The Anatomy of a Bait-and-Switch

A bait-and-switch seller lists a high-quality product photo, often stolen from a retail website or another seller's authentic listing. You order based on that image, but what arrives at the agent's warehouse is a cheaper, lower-quality version. The seller hopes you will either not notice during QC or accept it because the return process feels like too much hassle. This scam works because the listing and the reality only meet at the warehouse, after your money is already in the seller's account.

Red Flags in Seller Listings

Generic stock photos with no watermark are the biggest warning sign. Legitimate sellers usually watermark their own photos or take original shots with consistent lighting and backgrounds. Listings with no reviews, no sales history, and no return policy are also high-risk. Be especially wary of prices that are 40% below the market average for the same item, those margins only work if the product is not what it claims to be.

Using the Agent as Your Shield

The agent's QC process is your insurance policy. When warehouse photos arrive, compare them against the listing images pixel by pixel. Check for material differences, color shifts, and missing details. If the item is wrong, request a return immediately. Most agents handle Chinese domestic returns at the seller's expense if the product does not match the listing. The key is catching it before you approve the item for international shipping.

Golden rule: Never approve QC photos within the first hour of receiving them. Sleep on it. Fresh eyes catch details that excitement hides.
